I lived in Japan for four years and experienced many earthquakes. They were different, you could feel a small shake but 5 or 10 miles away, a village would be leveled to the ground. I lived there in 1966 to 1970 and at that time the building codes were not up to par for the amount of shakers they had and the severity of them. I don’t know about now but I would guess they are still behind in updating their codes.
